4. Interview Tips

without comments

If you want the people you are interviewing with to hire you, you have to demonstrate that they are going to be comfortable collaborating with you on a daily basis. They need to be reassured that once hired, you will support them with your talent, process, knowledge, good judgment, passion for the work and your ability to present and persuade. It’s not required but creative “leave behinds” can help seal the deal.

  • Research: project, product, team, history
  • Info Exchange: give & get (don’t assume the interviewer is going to do a great job
  • Details: be ready to explain who, what, when, why without being prompted.
  • Questions:
    • What objectives do you want the person to achieve in this position?
    • How will you measure the performance of the person you hire?
    • Who is involved in making the hiring decision?
    • When would I meet with the people I’d be working with?
    • How long have you been trying to fill the position?
    • Do you have any concerns about my work/skills?
  • Attitude: be positive, energetic
  • Connect: make a personal connection
  • Goal: Get the job offer.  There’s nothing to decide if you don’t.
